āI know youāve come to kill me. Shoot, you are only going to kill a manā
59 years ago today, Ernesto āCheā Guevara was killed by the CIA in Bolivia.
After the successful revolution in Cuba that he helped shape, he could have stayed there as the minister of industries, with his family and friends, but he was more devoted to the cause of international revolution than his own life, and he went on to participate in guerrilla warfare in Congo and later Bolivia, where he was ultimately captured and executed.
The world has certainly not forgotten him, but more importantly we have to remember his ideas. During the Cuban revolution he developed the āfocoā strategy for revolution in underdeveloped latin american countries. Foco is based on guerilla warfare against an imperialist-controlled government and army, conducted in rural areas by a professional vanguard. The goal of foco is to initiate revolution and actively create a mass movement instead of waiting for ideal conditions. Foco is also very similar to the āProtracted peopleās warā strategy developed by Mao Zedong which was successfully used against the Japanese in WW2 and the Nationalists in the civil war. Foco is described in detail in Cheās 1961 book Guerilla Warfare, available on the internet archive.
